An anchor for regeneration

Glasgow Museums commissioned us to undertake the masterplan and produce the development framework for a radical new transport museum on a regeneration site on the banks of the River Clyde. We started from a blank sheet of paper and began designing from the inside out – starting with the exhibition’s interpretive concept and letting that drive the architectural design. This plan provided the design brief for the appointment of Zaha Hadid Architects to produce a bold new home for the Museum.

A city on the move

We were reappointed to design and deliver the museum’s 6,000m2 of permanent exhibition galleries. Our concept evolved around the idea of Glasgow being on the move – a city of connections and crossings, movement, and activity. The Museum is not so much a showcase of transport and technology, but of the way that transport has changed our lives. It has been a runaway success with more than 1.3 million visitors a year, winning both European Museum of the Year and the Luigi Michletti Award for Best Science and Technology Museum in Europe.
