For the first phase of the Hong Kong Museum of History’s renovation, we were commissioned to create an in-depth exploration of Hong Kong’s community and global connections, through a comprehensive look at the city’s unique urban story. These stories are shared across three temporary galleries, in a series of exhibitions collectively called Multifaceted Hong Kong.
Our content design creates personal connections between visitors and the people who have lived in, settled in, migrated from or passed through Hong Kong. We drew on in-depth research of past lives, Hong Kong’s material culture, and the fabric of the city itself to unlock these nuanced personal stories.
’Sojourning in Gold Mountain’ explores the place of Gold Mountain shops in the lives of overseas Chinese in California. Creating an emotional connection was crucial. We designed a series of set pieces where visitors ‘meet’ the people whose belongings are on display, hearing their stories as if first-hand. In this way, the items become more meaningful, revealing their significance to people far from home.
Graphic design played a central role in shaping the visitor experience for ‘Yau Tsim Mong – The Urban Transition and Community Bonds’ gallery. Every graphic element was carefully crafted to reflect the district’s layered history – from its streetscapes to its shifting communities – creating a conceptual journey to the heart of the area.
In ‘Estorias Lusas: Stories of the Hong Kong Portuguese’, we shared the unique cultural identity of this early immigrant community via 250 objects. One of the first groups to settle on the island, the contributions of the Portuguese in Macao are unlocked by thoughtful interpretation delivered over 30 interactive and audiovisual experiences.
