Eden Qingdao is an ambitious take on the Eden Project’s proven model for engaging people with nature. We were commissioned to design the experiences for their first site in China, celebrating the role of water in the natural world. On the Yellow Sea, at the junction of two rivers, Eden Qingdao is ideally placed to tell that story and we worked closely with the client team on an experience design that brings this vividly to life.

Eden’s approach is for visitors to learn through play and Qingdao’s 227-acre site offers an array of routes to do just that. Our creative solution invites visitors to discover, explore, climb, swing and rest in Eden Qingdao’s experience-rich environments. A multi-level bamboo maze, water playground and the world’s largest ‘captive’ rainforest studded with specially commissioned art installations are just some of the areas we created for a diverse range of visitors to enjoy.

Our visitor journey moves from the micro – examining the hidden life of a single drop of water – to the macro, via a panoramic view of the surrounding wetlands. The experience culminates in a giant mechanical mountain. The thunder of its cascading water creates a sonic backdrop to the visit as the mountain itself transforms throughout the day.

“Our ambition for the new Science Centre is to be a truly rewarding destination for all.” - Lim Tit Meng, Science Centre Board Chief Executive
