The Bihar Museum, a new museum of ancient India in Patna, capital of the Indian state of Bihar, is one of the largest museums and most ambitious projects undertaken by a state government in India, and made to international standards. The Museum stands on thesite of the capital of India's ancient Magadhan Empire, Pataliputra. The museumgalleries chronologically illustrate the history of Bihar and its impact on the Sub-continent including contributions of Buddha, Mahavir, Asoka and the other personalities, universities, and dynasties. The facility also includes a large children's section where history is conveyed through highly interactive exhibits, where children can touch, play, discover and learn.
We worked along with the Department of Art, Culture and Youth(DACY) and the Building Construction Department of the Government of Bihar on developing this museum as the Master Planning consultant. It is situated on a 13.9 acresplot of land and features some of the invaluable artefacts from the existing Patna Museum. Our team's role has focused on developing the Master Plan and coordinating among the various experts required to complete this project. Our deliverables included conceptualization, institutional planning, collection analysis, public program, interpretative plan, operations plan, financial model, managing the architectural selection competition, exhibition design and management of exhibit fabrication andinstallation. The project also includes Concept Exhibition Design and Fabrication for the Children's Gallery.
The curatorial approach blends chronology with thematic storytelling, making regional identity a gateway to universal values. Interactive and hands-on experiences embody the museum’s ambition to engage all generations. Delivered on time and to budget, the Bihar Museum sets a new benchmark for locally grounded yet internationally relevant institutions.
